A sawmiller who
was moving to new premises required an extraction system that
would allow him to machine either hardwoods and softwoods on either
of two moulding machines and then collect the resultant shavings
and dust in the correct dedicated hardwood and softwood chip trailers.
Oregon-Canadian Europe Ltd. is an independently, privately owned
importer, sawmiller and distributor of Clear Softwoods, Scandinavian
Redwoods and Whitewoods and high quality Hardwoods.
Their move to a new mill in Manchester gave them the opportunity
of installing exactly the system needed to achieve the separation
of hardwood and softwood by products.
The system would need to incorporate a method of allowing the
by-products to be diverted to the correct trailer dependant upon
the type of wood being machined, on either moulder.
Although sounding a fairly simple requirement, in practice it
was not so easy. The system needed was one that was simple to
operate by the machine operative, and would be foolproof.
Airpol’s innovative approach was to have one of their Type RFPS Filters
dedicated to each moulder, and then discharge into one of two
conveying mains which would deliver the by-product to the correct
softwood or hardwood trailer.
The outlet of each filter was fitted with a compressed air change-over
damper which diverted the by-product to the correct conveying
duct, for onward delivery into the correct trailer.
The operation of these change over dampers was effected from the
control panel, also supplied by Airpol, so that moulder No.
1 could be selected for softwood or hardwood and the same with
moulder No. 2.
This selection, from inside the mill, would operate then dampers
and allow the by product to be diverted to the correct trailer.
After submitting their quotation, which was very competitive considering
the complexity of the system, Oregon-Canadian inspected one of
Airpol’s existing installations, and impressed with what they saw,
placed the order with us.
Now, all each machine
operative has to do is choose the correct trailer by means of a
simple change-over switch on the front of the control panel, dependant
upon what wood is being machined and he can be confident that the
by product from that wood will end up in the right trailer.
The softwood system has the further facility to discharge into one
of two trailers via a change-over damper on the conveying fan, due
to the softwood shavings being bulkier that the hardwood, and this
also allows the trailers to be changed without shutting the system
down.
The trailer filling system incorporates a ‘ring main’, which vents
the conveying air from the trailers, preventing dust escaping into
the surrounding area.
The use of Airpol’s continuously rated ‘RFPS’ Filters means that the
system can run 24/7 without down time needed for bag cleaning or
regeneration.
A third system on the site which also discharges into the hardwood
trailer filling system, serves a Stenner Resaw, Multi Rip saw and
Cross Cut saw.
